In February 2017, 400 high school students from five districts participated in the 19th Annual High School Hospitality Conference hosted at Golden Hall in Downtown San Diego.
Students from the Culinary Pathways at El Cajon Valley, Santana, Granite Hills, and IDEA center, as well as the Marketing, Sales, and Service Pathway from Mount Miguel High School attended the event.
The event is meant to inspire students to pursue a career in the hospitality sector, one of San Diego’s fastest growing industries. During the day, students had the opportunity to explore various careers and interact with professionals from local restaurants, hotels, and tourism hot spots.
The event kick-offed with a speech from Claudia Sandoval, the Season 6 winner of Fox Network’s hit TV series MasterChef. Following the speech and continental breakfast, students were divided into groups and were given a “behind-the-scenes” tour of almost 20 restaurants and hotels from downtown San Diego to Coronado.
After the tours, attended a Career Fair to interview and apply for summer jobs with San Diego’s top hospitality companies and talk with local universities and colleges to learn more about numerous educational pathways.
